How to Wear a Suit Jacket With Jeans?

Jeans are denim-made pants that can be counted as casual or informal bottom wear. Most men mistake jeans for any suit or blazer that they own in their closet. Certainly, that is not the fact. The hard truth is that not all suit jackets or blazers match jeans. Only sports coats and blazers are best suitable giving a perfect casual, informal, or semi-formal look.

Now that we know what type of suit jackets to wear—preferably, sports overcoats or jackets with single or double breasts and two or three-buttoned—let’s get into jeans fitting and the right occasions.

  1. Regular-fit jeans

Regular or quite loose jeans can be chosen for semi-formal occasions or events. For example, regular blue or black denim jeans work perfectly for a casual office day on a Thursday, Friday, or during the weekend.

  1. Baggy jeans

Baggy jeans are undoubtedly too casual and hence preferred only for most informal or casual occasions, like parties, get-to-gather events, etc. Since this gets way too informal, the color of the jeans does not matter here. Only ensure that it matches or pairs the color of the sports suit jacket chosen.

  1. Skinny-fit jeans

Skinny jeans are trendsetters of this decade and men can choose them for occasions that need the expression of personal styles. It could be a shopping mall or grocery store, you can choose and slay it as you like.

Suit jackets and jeans are separately sorted. Next, let’s quickly understand how men can pair different kinds of suit jackets with different kinds of jeans.

How do you pair jeans with suit jackets?

Traditional semi-formal suit jackets can be paired with jeans for business casual occasions. However, ensure two things—color and fit. The jeans can be dark blue, indigo, or black. The suit jacket can be contrasting but not have the same hue as the jeans. With fit, both have to be either relaxed or regular and definitely not tight or skinny fit.

On the other hand, for informal occasions, you can choose a sports jacket with custom prints, patterns, or details and wear contrasting jeans. Wearing light blue baggy denim jeans with a dark-hued suit works for these occasions.

Apart from the color and fit for specific occasions, there are other factors that you may have to consider to get a perfect jacket and jeans style.

Other factors to consider when pairing jackets with jeans

  1. Suit pattern: More than conventional solid jackets, those with slight patterns, embroideries, patchwork, or designs enhance the overall look and style when paired with right-colored jeans.
  2. A Shirt or Tee: Choosing between a dress shirt or a tee depends on the theme or the occasion. While the former suits semi-formal or business-formal occasions, the latter suits casual occasions.
  3. Tie and pocket square: A necktie and a pocket square on your suit jacket make it look too formal or professional. In this case, wearing jeans with them becomes meaningless. So, ensure the suit jackets do not have them and look casual and relaxed.

Type of jackets: Jeans pair better with single-breasted suit jackets than double-breasted. Also, wearing a lightweight jacket emphasizes casualness more than a heavy-weight or highly structured jacket.
