There is a major factor that can impact the relative casualness or smartness of an outfit: texture. Think about some of the most formal items in men’s wear—barathea dinner jackets or worsted wool business suits—they are nearly smooth and shiny. Alternate the worsted wool for a tweed or matte flannel, you apparently change the formal feel of the material. This will lend the garment a bigger size, adding to the casualness of the outfit, given that smarter looks are usually sleek and straight.
