HEY MAN, ARE YOU PREPARING YOURSELF TO DRESS FOR THE SUMMER?

As we’re approaching summer, know the three-point formula that makes up the perfect summer wardrobe: Breathability of the fabric + Lighter and bright hues + Airy, comfort fit. If your summer outfit ticks the afore-mentioned formula, this week’s blog has achieved its intended purpose.

When it comes to fabric, the no.1 choice is of course cotton, the ‘king of summer fabrics’. Ensure what you wear frequently during summer will be 100 percent cotton or cotton blends including cotton/silk and cotton/linen. It goes without saying that cotton is a great summer fabric for the simple reason that it is extremely versatile and breathable. The tighter weave construction features wrinkle-free characteristics which means it wrinkles less compared to loose fabrics such as linen.

Linen is considered to be the ‘queen of summer fabrics’ (literally!). It is sourced from the flax plant and is an excellent alternative to cotton. What that means is that wherever you find cotton (shorts, suits, tees, button-up shirts, etc.,) there always will be a linen variation. Linen is a fabulous summer fabric because of its more open weave construction which allows more escape of heat and air passing through it. Breathability is almost a lifesaver in dry, hot and humid conditions. Remember though linen wrinkles easily due to its lighter open weave (in fact, the more open the weave, the more will be the wrinkle). If you think wrinkle is an issue, go for a cotton/linen blend and you’ll definitely like the breathability of linen as much as the structure of cotton.

If you ask me, I view wrinkly linen as a pro giving you a more laidback nature of summer season style. As a matter of fact, linen that shows more wrinkles is a better quality. You should be careful about cheaper linens that are comparatively cheaper and crease as opposed to wrinkle and drape. Therefore, if all you get is a decent, drapey, wrinkly linen outfit, why not go for it?

When it comes to colors, don’t go for yellow and pink straightaway for a visually ‘Summery’ look. Check out for lighter shades of core neutrals including lighter olives, lighter grays and lighter browns. This easy-to-use switch will serve as the summer base hues. You can also add some appealingly vibrant colors on top of it if that’s what you want!
Getting the perfect fit is achievable if you select roomier or spacious cuts. Give some breathability to your skin. Don’t be reserved about trying out shorts and fuller cut pants, or relaxing a bit with button-downs and cut t-shirt. The trick is to choose loose, free-flowing clothes and robes in light, breathable materials (read the complete blog).

Here is my recommendation: check for pieces that carry the label “relaxed cut” against sizing up. Relaxed cuts will offer more breathability, whilst giving the proper body fit, especially such as the sleeve and length of the body. In case you size up later, the size of the garment can increase proportionally in all areas. This can result in garments that are too long for use. Again in the case of no relaxed cut option, you can afford to size up on a few outfit pieces as the last resort.
