Before we jump into the topic, it is important to understand the differences between “beige, “khaki” and “tan”, as we often interchange these colors while describing them. These are essentially different shades of brown, and aren’t easy to differentiate. Tan is a lighter shade version of pure brown. In other words, think of brown when white has been added to it—it’s paler, right? Beige is another mode of light brown with the addition of some green and yellow tones. Compare it to pure brown and you will be able to distinguish the various tones pop out. Khaki is not that tricky to discern. It stands out as it contains more yellow than brown. No wonder, it almost appears like an extremely dark cream color.

Tan is labelled as a neutral color and is one of the simplest colors to team up with. There are a lot of options to experiments so as to match neutral shades, even though that doesn’t mean that it can complement everything under the sun. The first color-foil is sporting a dashingly bold color with a tan, where the latter is a bland hue. There is a factor that stands out in a Double-breasted or DB jacket: the overlapping front closure and the manner in which it wraps about the wearer’s chest. If more be told, it’s generally cut shorter compared to the single-breasted jacket, and the upward buttoning can provide you with a broader-looking, increasingly sculpted shoulder-line. So, how do you style a double-breasted suit? Read on…

Stay on the button
There’s a cardinal rule when you put on a Double-breasted jacket that a lot of folks don’t seem to understand (and mind you, even the Hollywood types for that matter): always leave the bottom button of the suit open. It mars the line; it is restrictive and puts you into a shell. Imagine what it’ll be like if you aren’t able to move!

Dress it down
You don’t need to be a ringmaster when going for a DB; you can afford to mix the jacket with a more casual ensemble. I am not against your experimenting with different buttoning styles. That isn’t my job either. I simply feel that a low buttoning 4 x 1 double-breasted suit can work like a charm. Don’t hit Peak Label
One major differentiating factor between a double-breasted and single-breasted jacket is that the former allows you to try out shapes and proportions in increased depth. There are some tailors, for example, who advocate for peak labels extensively. As a matter of choice, some people go for those classic 70’s shapes. But as for me, DB is more about elegance, and things get compromised a bit if the lapels of a jacket hang over the shoulders.

Are you sitting comfortably?
All said and done, a double-breasted suit works like magic in any formal setting–but what happens when you have to sit down? Therein arises the question of whether to undo or not to. I see increasingly newer versions of the DBs constructed with a smaller overlap, therefore it still gives a good look when it is open, and there isn’t a surplus of fabric flapping about. It pays to remember that purple generally comprises a range of shades or gradations: some with more pink or red in them, others sporting tones of brown, burgundy or maroon, flatteringly reddish purples, especially in men’s suit wear. You can google online to know the different varieties of purple color. Mentioning those here will be beyond the scope of the blog. I’ll be discussing a few general guidelines for wearing purple. However, I am afraid I may miss a few points in the process.

The basic guideline for wearing purple pertain to any upbeat or unusual color in garments. Primarily, such colors should go with contrasting muted hues. For example, if you wear a green tie having purple strip, then go for a dark grey suit. Next, what about purple socks? Put on beige pants accessorizing with brown suede shoes.
In the event of your wearing one item that’s purple, you run the risk of sporting any other bright color. Consequently, you’ll look really outlandish. The trick is to tone down your purple’s saturation levels—either pick red wine or olives.
On the flip side of things, you can wear purple easily alongside beige, gray and navy. Put simply, it syncs with three of the most versatile and classic men’s wear colors available, in addition to other staid colors including olive green. Blue, which has stronger family ties with purple, as a color, can fashion particularly brilliant combinations (trust me!). Make your shirt a tad lighter increasingly muted tone of purple. If you have browner skin, go for stronger varieties of purple, which also holds true in the case of any bright tones of colors, as you’ll find that there’s comparatively less severe tonal contrast.
In terms of accessories, because purple is still a bold hue, ensure to keep your shoes, shirt, pocket square, and may be even your watch unassuming. And, last but not the least, purple is obviously different, but don’t think you can’t pull off a good look with it. It goes without saying that putting on a plum suit would instantaneously help score some quick brownie points. Well, if you’re strong in the fundamentals of suiting, never be afraid to test the waters.

Even as we’re halfway through the first month of the year, it always pays to put up a blog on how men should plan wearing their suit this January. The fact that you can reuse the suit recommendations year after year makes this an effort worthwhile. The first factor that would help you to plan the right suit is its construction and fabric, depending on how warm you want. You can either go for half-or fully-lined suit jackets, as a matter of preference. Suitable for everyday wear, lined jackets are usually wrinkle-resistant, can retain warmth and outperform well during travel compared to unlined suits. Here’re my recommendations when it comes to choosing the best fabric materials, colors and textures for this month’s suiting.

Wool Suit:
I recommend wool not just because it can keep you warm (of course), but also comes with the ability to drape well, conform to one’s shape, maintain its form, and flexible as a practical material to use—either close-fitting and warm or loose and breathable as required. The most popular material is Worsted wool as it can adapt to changes in temperature, lasts well and gives off appreciable shine found in most premium suits in the marketplace. Other popular types of wool include tweed and flannel. In terms of weight, worsted wool is mid-weight, while tweed is comparatively heavier and flannel is considered as the heaviest.
Tweed is an excellent suit this January because it is warm, thick, durable and water-resistant. Yet still, tweed suits are slightly heavier compared to most other suits, and make a fine winter suit choice because it is thick, warm, water resistant, and durable. However, tweed suits are a little heavier compared with most suits, and the fabric is a coarse of touch.
Flannel, which typically comes from worsted wool, shares a similar look with that of herringbone and tweed, although softer in terms of touch. In the case of winter weddings, I recommend cashmere, velvet and wool, in addition to jackets, blazers and heavily constructed shoes. When the summer is at its peak, the best outfit for wedding guests should include fabrics that are lightweight, comfortable and free flowing.

If deciding what to wear for the holiday is one thing, deciding what not to wear is another thing. It can also be a daunting challenge to decide what not to wear. Now, if your holiday involves a lot of packing, it can be a strain on your part, and may well play spoilsport. Be doubly careful about what not to wear especially for your office holiday party.And in case you’re travelling to some place warm, where the climate turns unbearable, don’t forget to pack your swimsuit and other accessories. You can also include lightweight outfits when you aren’t relaxing at the beach. A lightweight kaftan can prove to be quintessential when you need to cover yourself up at the beach; it is short enough to be teamed up with shorts if you want to put it on and take a walk around town. For instance, wearing jewelry—maybe I don’t mind simple and easily removable bracelet—is not recommended, as this crafts a cheap gaudy look. Check for any bulky accessories as well. Stylish exercise gear can make your feel comfy, but not at the expense of sacrificing style points. I wouldn’t recommend exercise gear or athleisure for plane rides too. An important point I need to mention here is the use of flammable synthetic fibers including nylon and polyester. This is because they are kind of restrictive, don’t allow easy movement of airflow which means they are not breathable during travel. Avoid wearing oversized coats when you fly. Needless to say, they’re cumbersome, and to squeeze those into your carry-on or the overhead bin requires an extraordinary effort. Finally, avoid wearing flip flops as you will find it difficult if you need to sprint for a flight or catch a bus. Bonus: Any good in leaving your feet exposed to germs and dirt?

There are a few do’s and don’ts that most style pros share when it comes to selecting the right outfit for a wedding guest. If you’re a groomsman, then you need to be doubly careful about what you wear in a wedding ceremony before you perform the required acts. Style-conscious couples will agree that any wedding dress code depends on the style of the occasion or event, and what time of the year it is. For instance, what your wear to a casual wedding when the sun is scorching bright will be vastly different from what you wear to a black-tie wedding in the bitingly chilly cold.

Suppose if you’re code is black-tie; then I recommend a black tuxedo. Guests should also pick the appropriate tuxedo-shirt, cufflinks in a matchy-matchy metal, a stud set, either a vest waist or cummerbund covering, with white-colored pocket square and black patent leather shoes as suitable accessories.

If it’s a casual daytime wedding, I suggest a navy blazer, and if it’s specifically casual, go for khaki pants or a blue button-down slack. You therefore need to understand the different wedding dress codes for making an informed decision on the selection of an appropriate outfit. Learning what is what: black-tie optional, white tie, formal outfit, semi-formal, dressy casual, cocktail outfit and all others in between is important. Only by thoroughly understanding the various dress codes, you can decide on the right outfit type to your next wedding as a guest.

The location of the wedding shouldn’t be taken lightly in the matter of selecting the right outfit if you’re a wedding guest. For example, don’t expect that what you wear for an outdoor wedding at a farm will be equally good for an evening bash at a swanky ballroom. It is also important to check if there are any religious ceremonies featuring in the wedding. Attending a wedding in a religious facility requires a bit of attention. Ensure your shoulders are well covered and hats removed. Therefore, some research should go into the wedding venue before the actual event so you may understand what the expectations are. You can also check the photos of the venue on its website or social media pages for greater clarity. Leave no stone unturned on what not to wear that is not appropriate to a wedding based on its theme, season of the year, location and formality.

MEN’S FALL FASHION—DO’S AND DON’TS

Fall is here, and this is the time of the year you can consider switching your outfit as the mercury level abates, and as the season presents different style challenges. Don’t forget that the temperatures can be highly predictable at times, and you have to prep yourself. No worries, I’ve got you covered with the do’s and don’ts of the men’s Fall fashion.

Fall style do’s:
Colors and more colors:
Just because it’s Fall season and it’s biting cold outside, it doesn’t mean you should stop experimenting with colors. Replace the typical bright or pastel colors of Summer or Spring with darker jewel tones and earth tones, and mash up with black, neutral greys and navy.

Fall is more about layering…
Fall can vary in terms of temperature, if anything else. It can be warmer in the day often followed by intense cold at night. Right, let’s deal with it through proper layering. Like everything, it’s a skill you can learn and master over time. First, it helps you regulate temperature variations. Two, you’ll look trendy stylish with the right combination, of course. The basic style is to wear a casual button-down or t-shirt as the base layer, and put on a sweater or sweatshirt on top, further layered on top with a wool jacket, bomber jacket or sport coat.

Accessories:
Boots can be unavoidable during Fall/Winter and wearing the right pair can give you a lasting look. I recommend chukkas and casual and dress boots as fitting accessories. You can also go for any of your favorite boots, and talk to me in case of any clarifications.

Fall style dont’s:
Wearing only jeans:
Not a big err—it can be tempting to wear only jeans during the Fall. However, I recommend you to experiment with wool trousers and thicker chinos for variety and flexibility this Fall.

Expose lots of bare ankle:
Apparently, if the climate is still warm, it is OK to show some flesh, body and boyishness by the way. But with the Fall mode on, and the weather seemingly chill and lowering, then your pre-fall outfit would spell discomfort. If you want to pick a cuff on your pants, do so with boots or any heavier shoes or footwear.

Wear lightweight fabrics:
Wearing lightweight stuff including linen, seersucker, chino cloth or anything similar during Fall and Winter months is a strict no-no. Wait until next year’s Spring to use them again. I recommend denim, heavier cotton types, leather and wool blends, the natural fabrics of choice anyways.
