The Difference Between Organic and Perc dry cleaning

The Difference Between Organic and Perk dry cleaning!
HOW DRY CLEANING PROCESS WORKS
When you have clothes that are delicate, or that would be damaged by water or rough handling of a washing machine then the available means of cleaning such clothes is to dry clean it. Dry cleaning uses chemical solvent to clean clothes. Chemical solvents used include: perchloroethylene, hydrocarbons, dibutoxymethane, liquid silicone, bromine containing solvents etc. This process involves soaking clothes in solvent (except water) in other to remove dirty stains. Thus the process is not absolutely “dry”.

Mechanism of Dry Cleaning Process….
The process of dry cleaning involves the placement of the clothes in a washing (extraction) chamber of a dry cleaning machine while the solvent is placed in the rotating drum. The machine removes stains from clothes during the washing process by filling the chamber with the solvent which is then passed through the filtration chamber to remove the dirt and subsequently reused. After the wash cycle, the solvent is processed by distillation to remove water.
Solvent Commonly Used In Dry Cleaning…

The most commonly used chemical solvent for dry cleaning is perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene) otherwise known as “perc”. Also known as dry cleaning fluid, “perc” is a colourless, volatile, nonflammable, toxic chemical with sweet smell. It cleans perfectly and does not degrade clothes. It is produced by chlorinolysis of light hydrocarbons by high temperature. Its other uses include: degreasing of metals, in electric transformers as cooling gas, as one of the constituents of paint strippers, etc.

“Perc” has been classified as a potential carcinogen (cancer causing agent) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It can enter the body through the respiratory tract, the skin and by drinking contaminated water and long term exposure has been found to be associated with the development of breast cancer, lymphoma, and cancers of the cervix, oesophagus and various damages in other organs of the body. It also increases the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Pregnant women with prolonged exposure can also have their babies damaged. Thus in the year 2010 the California’s Air Resources Board shut down all dry cleaning machine using perc.
Organic Dry Cleaning…

In chemical industry, organic compound are those with carbon as the backbone of their structure. Though “perc” is an organic solvent, organic dry cleaning is used to refer to methods of dry cleaning clothes without the use of perchloroethylene (perc). Solvent used include silicone based solvent, hydrocarbon, carbon dioxide (CO2), etc. Organic dry cleaning using CO2 involves conversion of CO2 to liquid which is then used to wash clothes and subsequently converted back to gas.

These solvents are being used as substitutes for perchloroethylene due to their advantages over the latter. They are non-toxic, no documented risk of causing cancer, and environmentally safe. Thus, looking at the various health-related adverse effects of perc, and its environmental hazards, it is safer to go for organic dry cleaning and avoid perc.

In the end…
Everything depends what you feel is the best for you. Just always remember to ask your cleaners and questions you may have.

Bucco Couture – The Man of Style – What does your suit say about you

Quality fitted suits

QUALITY over QUANTITY when it comes to your clothing

The Suit You Buy Above Could Cost You The Job — Literally! Why Custom Suits Will Rock Your World…

You know that feeling, gentlemen.

You have a big function coming up, or a very promising job interview, so you find yourself scrambling for the most presentable formal wear you have. You might have a great shirt, or even a pair of pants that suits you flawlessly. Yet, look at the end result of the contents of your wardrobe — an outfit that passes the muster for formality, but does little to make you stand out. Even worse, your formalwear may simply be inappropriate with perhaps clashing or, and this is the worst offender of them all, ill-fitting pieces.

Why is fit so important?..

First, fit is absolutely indicative of quality. Compare the stitches on a low-end department store suit versus a made-to-measure suit. Sizing in mass-produced suits are based on average proportions in different weight/height brackets. This might seem like the proper way to go, but people vary vastly. Ever have a friend who was close to you in height and weight, but was proportionally distinct from yourself? The mass produced suits in many stores would not and could not accommodate for every variation in the same size bracket, so almost everybody buying mass-produced suits is left for wanting.

Fit is very important in other regards…

If you have an eye for detail, you may notice that the stitches are tighter on a made-to-measure suit. This creates a longer-lasting product, as seams will have less points of pressures due to the suit being properly fitted. Not only that, but mass-produced suits often do not match up with patterns along the seams. Prints can make or break a suit, and can even inadvertently make a man look husky if they are not chosen and matched up carefully. These may seem like tiny details to somebody new to fashion, but these are signs any man should be aware of as he considers a new suit purchase.

A properly fitted suit can do a number of things to make you look even better…

A proper fit can accommodate where you need extra space (a must for gentlemen with broad shoulders) and be taken in by a clever tailor to make your fit slimming at the same time. A made-to-measure suit can make even a couch-potato excited to go to formal functions, because almost everybody loves a self-esteem booster like looking sharp in custom clothing made to fit.

In the end… That boost of confidence may prove more useful than you ever thought.

A prospective employer will notice made-to-fit clothing and understand you are a man who does not miss a single detail. Better yet, that boost of self-esteem from your unique formalwear might just have you standing a little taller. Regardless of what you need a suit for, you will be impressed with the quality and fit delivered by a made-to-measure suit. Your investment will yield you many returns for years to come, and its durability will pay for itself in no time at all.

Everything depends on your budget and what best fits you. Weather it is ready-made, custom or bespoke there is a better you in there!

To starch or not to starch

To Starch Or Not To Starch…That Is The Question

So you just bought some great new custom shirts from Bucco  and you’re wondering if you should starch them? Great question!

To answer this properly you should know exactly what starch is and why we use it. Clothing or laundry starch is a liquid that is prepared by mixing a vegetable starch in water, and is used when you launder your clothes.  Starch was widely used in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries to stiffen the wide collars of fine linen which surrounded the necks of the wealthy.  During the 19th century and early 20th century, it was stylish to stiffen the collars and sleeves of men’s shirts and the ruffles of girls’ petticoats by applying starch to them as the clean clothes were being ironed.
Aside from the smooth, crisp edges it gave to clothing, it served practical purposes as well. Dirt and sweat from a person’s neck and wrists would stick to the starch rather than to the fibers of the clothing, and would easily wash away along with the starch. After each laundering, the starch would be reapplied. Today, the product is sold in aerosol cans or applied at the Dry Cleaners.

Starch makes clothes look crisp, clean and neat and often gives the person wearing the garment a more affluent look. So it should be a no-brainer to starch your shirts, right? Not necessarily, there are some pros and cons that you should consider when deciding how to best protect this investment in your wardrobe.  After all, these beautiful shirts were created just for you, they fit you perfectly and they are a crucial part of your new wardrobe, so you’ll want them to last a lifetime.
Let’s start with the pros  of starching, as I stated, you get a clean and crisp appearance after starching. Ironing is easier on a starched shirt. Starched garments resist stains and washing a stain out isn’t as hard to do. They are also less likely to wrinkle. Businessmen wearing starched shirts send a message of being well put-together by wearing a well-pressed wrinkle-free shirt. However, the cons of starching are that the starch makes clothes feel scratchy and uncomfortable against your skin. Most professionals agree that it could break the fabric down and that certainly reduces the life of the garment. Knife edges on the sleeves will likely one day come back from the laundry frayed.

Starching works best on 100% cotton fabrics but cotton/poly blends don’t starch well. Dark shirts don’t either and if they are over-treated or saturated with the starch, they could develop a shine. Again, starch is best for business and formal wear. GQ Magazine agrees that starch is better suited to formal wear and their advice is to avoid starch for other types of shirts. They say the best treatment for your shirts is hand pressed with no starch. However, if you really want a crisp and fresh look, you can ask your dry-cleaner for light starch.

Ultimately it comes down to this, it’s a personal choice. If you think nothing beats the crispness of elegant dress shirt then by all means, starch your shirts to give yourself that added edge. If you have sensitive skin and itchy fabrics are uncomfortable then choose comfort and don’t starch them. If you want your shirts to last a very long time, then absolutely don’t starch and protect your investment. At Bucco Couture, we believe in educating our customers so that we can help them to make informed choices when it comes to not only shopping for new pieces to add to your wardrobe but also caring for your clothing properly in addition to showing you ways to improve your image and be the best dressed man in your office.   Check out our video on starch.

Super 100’s 120’s 150’s and up what does it really mean?

Wools come from many mills around the world Asia, Italy, England and many other places. Suits can come in many variations wool/ poly blends, 100% wool, Wool/Cashmere and Wool/Silk blends. Depending on where they come from can change the price very much. A fine suit normally starts in the 80’s and 90’s and can move up from there. A super 120 can make a beautiful suit when you get into Super 150’s and up you are at the top of the line when it comes to quality. Just be aware you can get a super 150’s suit but know where the material comes from. That is where a lot of people make the mistake. Don’t be fool by the tag look into the shell fabric inside the suits and should tell you what it is made of. Super any number means: how much 1 Grams of wool or any of that fabric will extend, means the smaller the number the heaver the fabric is, it’s not like a carpet thread role. Super lightweight, high twist fabrics were established by Italian mills over 5 years ago. The fabrics are milled with high tech machines that spin the thread like nothing else which makes it finer. Always remember the higher the s-number the better the fabric.

Now the number refers to the fineness of the wool as measured in microns Fineness is just one quality component: Length, strength, color, and crimp are also important, with the first two particularly so. Length is critical because the longer the fiber, the stronger the yarn that can be spun from it. Strength is critical because the yarn must be twisted very tightly (hence the name high-twist fabric) to achieve a fine weave. The way in which the fabric is finished also plays an enormous role in the feel and look. There is a possibility that a super 100 can feel as luxurious as a super 120 to 140 but that is all because of the finishing. It is not easy to get such fine wool, sheep flocks have to be specially bred and managed so they grow the requisite fleece

So how should you maintain your closet in this world of wool? Make super 100s and Super 150s the mainstay of your wardrobe. They are durable, resilient, Treat above super 150s’ or silk, cashmere wool blends as your home run suits.

For the record super 100’s and up does not mean the stitch count it is the fineness of the thread. Watch wear the actual material is spun and milled that makes a big difference. If you are buying high end brand name materials for under $1200.00 question it. If you want that lavish look like you see on news and sports casters remember those materials probably have a blend that is where that luxurious look comes from.

At Bucco Couture for our custom and bespoke clothing we use only the best, qualified mills in the world to deliver your garment looking and feeling luxurious. We truly believe that is what makes a great looking suit.

Super 110’s super 150’s

Does “Super 150s Wool” Make For A Great Suit?

Any man feels especially suave and sophisticated when he’s buying a new suit. Even folks with modest financial means are willing to splurge on high-quality formal clothing.

Then it happens: The customer’s eye lights on the tags on a premium suit. It says “Super 180s” wool. And the price is incredibly high. The fabric’s amazingly smooth, it feels great on the hand – but does that mean the suit is something extra special?

The Amazing History of The Super Number

In a world of high technology, the origin story of wool’s super number is laughably arcane. It goes back to the 18th century, when the production of wool became a global industry. Spinners needed a way to quantify the fineness and quality of different vendors’ wool. What they wound up with was counting the number of “hanks,” heavy-duty yarn spools that could be spun from a single pound of wool.

For centuries, the fineness of quality wool ran from 30s to 100s. That started to change in the mid-twentieth century, as refined weaving technology made it possible to break the 100s barrier. Fineness took a big jump, the measurement gained the prefix “Super,” and authorities started measuring with a microscope.

Today virtually all suit wool is over 100s, with numbers above 150s being common for extremely fine suits. Experts predict that 250s wool will enter the marketplace soon, indicating the upper limit of modern possibilities.

Clearing Up Confusion: Important Distinctions To Make

It’s important to understand the distinction between the different terms used to describe the fineness of wool before purchasing a good suit. “Super 110s” indicates fabric that’s fairly fine and spun entirely from wool. A number without the “super” prefix indicates a wool blend, although the fineness requirements are the same.

It should also be noted that because of its weight-to-fineness origins, this measurement is completely different from the “thread count” used to gauge the fineness of other fabrics, like cotton. The modern range of wool used in good suits ranges from Super 100s to Super 150s, with lower fineness grades being practically unheard of. Higher grades exist, though, and they command astronomical prices.

The Truth About Super Wools – Finer Fabric, Poorer Durability

No one can deny that fine wool suits are far lighter and finer than they were just ten years ago. No refinement comes without price, though. As weavers produce lighter and lighter wool, they lose the incredible durability that made wool valuable in the past. Suits crafted from high Super number wool are closer to linen in the way they crease and wear. This means that the high end of the Super number scale is not just rare, it’s also incredibly fragile. Sports cars make for an apt analogy: Think of a Super 180s wool suit like a Ferrari. It’s best suited to wearers who can not only afford it but afford to lose it.

Tailoring Is Still King

For ordinary men, it’s best not to worry too much about Super numbers. Excellent suits can be created (and are!) using wool in the Super 110s to Super 150s range. When he starred in the Thomas Crown Affair, Pierce Brosnan was clad exclusively in Super 150s. It cannot be stated often enough: A stylish, well-tailored wool suit will look great in fabric of almost any fineness.
In contrast, even the rarest Super 200s wool cannot save a man who’s wearing a poorly cut suit. It’s better to invest in a good fit and excellent adjustments before worrying about super premium wool.

Reasons to dress better

So gentleman, as you prepare to ring in 2016, one of the first things you should do is reflect back on last year and learn from, not only your mistakes, but also from what you did right.

One of the biggest keys to your continued success is understanding the role that dressing well plays both in your personal and professional lives. If you had less than a banner year, and see some room for improvement, then maybe you should consider stepping up your fashion game.

So make 2016 the year that your New Year’s resolution will be for you to dress well and become a fashion leader and not a follower.  We want you to learn the importance of dressing for success and everything that entails.

Consider this; nothing feels better than looking good and knowing that you look amazing when you walk into a room. But it’s not about just buying the latest fashions. It’s more about understanding why dressing well produces favorable results and how you can develop a personal style that works for you. Research proves that how you look influences what people think of you. Wearing an impeccably tailored suit can make you look smarter, wealthier and more successful. Dressing with a purpose gives you the appearance of being more trustworthy and dependable. If you look like a winner, people will automatically perceive you as one.

In comparison, a sloppy, poorly groomed and badly dressed man sends the opposite message of a loser or at best someone who doesn’t have a clue.

A man who is well-dressed inspires confidence, makes a good first impression, and shows the world that you’re bringing your “A” game.  Because truthfully no one should settle for being average or mediocre and life is too short to wear ugly clothes.

There’s nothing better than getting compliments not on your clothes but on your appearance.

You want people to notice you and your swagger not the actual clothes. Fashion is about self-expression and defining who you are through your style choices. Clothes can make the man, that’s true, but a man of style makes the clothes his own.

It’s your attitude that should shine through because you know you look great.  One final thought, you should always look your best because you never know who you will meet in life. In this age of technology and camera phones etc, you always want to look your best. Be prepared for anything by never leaving the house looking anything less than impeccable.
