Awards Season 2024: The men’s suit trends and inspirations
The red carpet fashion in 2024 was unique, sophisticated, and dapper. Unlike every other year that passed by, the men’s suits on this year’s red carpet had enough surprises for all of us in terms of new styles, colors, and ideas. After all, red-carpet fashion is what every fashionista awaits—not just to watch but to flaunt.
Here are some notable, impressive trends in men’s suits from the Grammy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the BAFTA Awards.
- All black attire
Apart from many men who chose the usual formal black suit with a white dress shirt, some chose full black attire for this year’s award ceremonies.
You might have seen Marcus Mumford and Kingsley Ben-Adir at the BAFTAs in complete black hues. They looked polished and top-notch. Again, at the Grammys, Finneas O’Connell and John Legend wore the coolest solid black attire. And at the Oscars, Ryan Gosling and Robert Downey Jr. topped the styles.
- Charming red hues
Red shades became the show stealers on the red carpets this 2024. Be it Andrew Scott’s vibrant blood-red tuxedo, Barry Keoghan’s contrastingly checkered blazer and trousers, or Landon Barker’s shirtless bright red suit, everything looked stunning and charming. Many others used red shirts or waistcoats to contrast their black suits.
- Extra-long coats
Of course, long coats are vintage. Yet, leading men’s suit designers have opted to use these long coats to create new style statements this year. Fortunately, they worked well!
Riz Ahmed wore a chocolate brown hemless extra-long coat that gave a rugged and earthy feeling at the Oscars. On the other hand, Marcus Mumford used a black, loose, long coat to give a relaxed feel. No second thought—both were in style.
- Sheer fabrics
This year, runways and red carpets boasted sheer fabric like never before. For instance, Jeremy Allen White wore a simple black sheer shirt covered by a long double-breasted overcoat at the Golden Globes 2024. Similarly, at Grammy’s, Lenny Kravitz wore a sheer shirt covered by a custom leather bolero.
- Patterned suits
Undoubtedly, patterned suits became the talk of the town after the Grammy Awards. The music legend Lionel Richie gleamed in his crystal dragonfly-patterned black suit; Calvin Harris preferred an abstract AOP (All Over Printed) tan suit; Peso Pluma wore a jacket detailed in silver; and Jacob Collier featured a patchwork-patterned suit.
Needless to say, all these patterns were distinguished and set a new trend—patterns.
- Back-in-style cummerbunds
Are cummerbunds oudated? Not at all! Celebrities are bringing them back in style and history is repeating itself. Thanks to the Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who flaunted his cummerbunds at BAFTAs and Oscars.
Besides, Colman Domingo and Matt Bomer wore cummerbunds at BAFTAs and Golden Globes red carpets, respectively.
- Unique brooches
This year’s red carpet was flooded with several unique brooches or lapel pins. At the Oscars, Jeffrey Wright chose a stone-studded flower brooch, Mark Ruffalo chose a flower-like dazzling pin, and Tatanka Means preferred a turquoise stone-embedded pin. At the BAFTAs, Robert Downey Jr. wore a glittering starfish which was truly amazing.
