In the 1600s in England, men wore a different jacket called the smoking jacket for their dinner. The reason for wearing such smoking jackets was to avoid falling off the ashes on the dinner costume when smoking.
Later in the 1860s, the Prince of Wales, Edward VII customized his smoking jacket without long tails. And people liked him wearing such comfy jackets and making them a great style to wear back then. In due course, it became a poshy dinner attire for men that speaks for itself!
