When cars hit the roads, the general public gave up public transport so that they don’t have to walk to the train from home in the drizzle—they were protected by the car’s roof. There’s also a general theory that suggests that post-World War II situation knelt a death-blow to hats, as it poignantly reminded of the time people spent in uniform. War veterans totally abandoned the use of hats with civilian clothes post-war.
